Master Data Management (MDM)

Master Data Management (MDM) is a discipline that actively manages data across an entire enterprise, rather than maintaining it in each transactional system/application.

The implementation of Master Data Management will:

  • Eliminate data redundancy.

  • Enable consistent edits (master data edits span all applications).

  • Efficiently support businesses running on multiple platforms.

  • Significantly lower maintenance costs.

Our MDM implementations are distinguished by the tools we use to reduce time to benefit.

For example, in Phase 1:

  • We insert a mediator (universal data access layer) between the applications requesting data and their respective data sources. The mediator is then configured to return "canonical forms" of the data. This practice reduces the number of data access methods. Further, the canonical types preview the Master Data Objects of Phase 2.

  • The mediator synchronizes data.

  • Data access is via "Adaptive SQL" (Adaptive SQL is a symbolic database programming language that automatically adapts to database schema changes--click here for more information). Thus, when transitioning to the Physical Master Data Model no code changes are necessary.

In many cases, our Phase 1 solution is all that is needed.

Phase 2 of our solution builds the Physical Master Data Model. The important distinction in Phase 2 is that there is no need to write code to adapt to the new data model. As described previously, the Adaptive SQL in the mediator will automatically target the new/transformed databases.

Typical activities of Phase 2 include:

  • Data Rationalization (elimination of duplicate, inaccurate, incomplete, and out of date data, along with the redundant data.

  • Creation and Implementation of a Physical Master Data Model.

  • A Data Transition Plan (ensures the transition from the current state to the desired state is smooth and without problems).

  • A Data Governance Model (ensures that the solution stays intact over time).
